St. Francis wins defensive slugfest at Anthony Wayne

WHITEHOUSE – A slobberknocker broke out between D-II, Region 6 combatants St. Francis and Anthony Wayne on Friday night, with the Knights coming out on top, 10-7.
“I wasn’t expecting that,” said Chipka of the low-scoring affair. “I was expecting kind of an AFC North throwdown or an NFC North throwdown. Just a great defensive effort by both teams. Both stout defenses and we both like to run the ball. I felt like both of us took away the run game. It was a matter of making plays down field.”
AW entered the game averaging 41.3 ppg and St. Francis was averaging 30.9 ppg.
St. Francis earns a rematch at Central Catholic with the win in the Region 6 quarterfinals next Friday.

Wauseon hosting defending state champ Clyde

Two teams that nearly met in last year’s playoffs will collide on Saturday night at Wauseon’s Harmon Field with defending D-IV state champion Clyde in town.
The Indians (6th seed) enter at 5-1 overall coming off a bye in the opening round of last week’s D-IV, Region 14 playoffs. The 4-3 Fliers (seeded 11th) defeated Brookside, 42-6, last Saturday night in playoff action. Clyde, which returned only three starters from last year’s state championship squad, is battle-tested going into Saturday night. The Fliers suffered a 16-7 loss to Region 14 top seed Bellevue two weeks back while also falling to a pair of strong D-III programs: 30-14 to Norwalk and 19-16 to Tiffin Columbian.

Aces, Rams meet in week 3 rematch

Defiance County rivals Tinora and Hicksville will tee up the pigskin on Saturday night at 7 p.m. in the D-VI playoffs four weeks after a 41-0 Rams’ win at Aces’ Field.
Hicksville mentor Lucas Smith is hopeful his team has improved enough to make the rematch much more interesting.
“I know we are different, we have improved and are excited for the opportunity,” explained Smith. “Tinora also tends to get better as the season progresses. I’m hoping that our two extra games have helped us identify weakness and areas of improvement.”

AW hosting St. Francis in D-II playoff clash

St. Francis and Anthony Wayne will meet for the fourth straight season but for the first time in the stretch in the playoffs when the Knights visit the Generals on Friday night. The Division II, Region 6 dustup will kickoff at 7 p.m.
AW (4-2) has outscored St. Francis (5-2) 108-30 over the last three years in regular season games. The Generals beat the Knights 22-13 last fall on the heels of wins of 42-10 and 44-7 the previous two seasons.
Anthony Wayne brought in 19 new starters this year and there has been a major learning curve.
“I think it’s learning our culture still and the way we do things as a program,” said AW frontman Andy Brungard. “Some kids this is their first year playing football or this is their first year playing varsity football. We’re not able to do things we normally are used to. It’s weird when you can’t sit in the film room or the locker room or do certain things you’re used to.”
