Week after surviving scare at Leipsic, Grove hopes to continue NWC winning streak

A week after surviving a scare in its quest for a fourth consecutive NWC crown, Columbus Grove (6-0, 3-0 NWC) will welcome Crestview (5-1, 2-1 NWC) to Clymer Stadium on Friday.
The Bulldog rallied from a 21-3 deficit at conference newcomer Leipsic last week to keep a 15-game NWC winning streak going.
Grove ran just a dozen plays in the first half and scored only three points on a 50-yard Rece Verhoff field goal.
“We have all kinds of formations and personnel packages this season,” said Grove coach Andy Schafer. “We tried it all and nothing was working.”

NWC newcomer Leipsic hosting fellow conference unbeaten Columbus Grove

With Leipsic in the midst of its first year as a member of the NWC, the Vikings will begin a yearly clash with Putnam County neighbor Columbus Grove.
While the two county powers are now members of the same conference, they are not strangers to each other on the gridiron. The Vikings and Bulldogs will meet for the 33rd time Friday night with Grove holding a hefty 25-6-1 edge in the series that started in 1924.
However, Leipsic has won the last three meetings after Grove claimed 23 straight over the Vikings. The two programs played sporadically from 1924-1963 with Grove winning 23 straight at one point starting in 1939. Grove won 25 of the first 29 meetings while Leipsic claimed wins in 1924, 1936 and 1938.

Columbus Grove puts NWC streak on line vs. Allen East

Heavyweights of the NWC will hit the gridiron on Friday at Columbus Grove’s Clymer Stadium with Allen East invading.
Grove is riding a 13-game NWC winning streak dating back to the 2019 season. The Bulldogs’ last NWC setback came in the conference opener of the 2019 season at home to Allen East, 14-11.
The triumph helped send the Mustangs to the Region 23 playoffs while keeping a 7-3 Grove team out of the playoffs.
A year ago, the adversaries played a pair of white knucklers, both won by Grove: 30-21 in week 3 and 27-24 in the NWC championship to cap the regular season.
